Some recent e-mails:
Hi,
I just wanted to let you know that your site was a great help to me for my science project. I have to do an oral report on the telephone from invention to present use. Without your website to help me, I'll probably still be looking for information!!
Thanks,
Tom,
I am writing a book and am working on the technology chapter at this time. In the course of my research, I found your wonderful website (through askjeeves.com) and am making liberal use of your excellent research and clear writing. Your work is liberally cited in this chapter. Thank you
for making my life a lot easier.
Dear Mr. Farley,
Just wanted to drop you a short note thanking you for the information you provided me on mobile telephones. It has been most helpful. Especially of aide were the photographs. Having a visual tool makes the descriptive words needed easier to come by.
I was also most pleased that your answer to my request came so quickly. It is very rare in this day and age that anyone takes to time to respond right away to any request for assistance. Thank you so much.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I would like to express my gratitude for the existence of this website. What a shame it took so long to find it but there we go! At least now I will no longer have to run around the libraries and bookshop in London trying to find a book to complete my assignment! I can not believe that not even one bookstore in London stocks a book about the history of this wonderful tool: the telephone!!
Thanks so much for all the info displayed!!
Dear Tom,
I wanted to drop you a message to let you know that I found more information on your site that was useful than any others I have looked at in the last three hours!
I am partial owner of a small consulting and training firm, and we have been tasked with writing a "useful" training course focused at the technician. The manual is about 50% complete, but it has taken me two weeks to pull information together. I just now found a lot of that information on your site. Little late, but it at least has useful information to assist in my task.
Again, thanks and keep up the good work!

About your website: it is simply great! It helped me a lot with my lectures.
Congratulations!

Dear Tom:
I just got back from space camp and wanted to tell you that 2 of the things I had learned at your site helped me out during camp. They showed us a slide show of the space shuttle flying through an oval looking cloud. I was able to identify that it was breaking the sound barrier because of the picture you had of the jet. Then they were talking about how transmissions from the moon had about a 20 sec. delay between sending and receiving and I knew that was because of the speed of light and Britney Spears video info. I later read on the 'bad astronomy' site that that was one of the proofs that we actually did land on the moon. The site said that the other countries that were listening in timed it to make sure we weren't pulling off a hoax. So thanks again, your site has been very helpful!

Dear Sir,
I am a student in India doing my electronic and telecom engineering who just happened to visit this site, a most excellent job. I would love to contribute to it, Ijust dont know how. I will have to wait until I learn...
A MOST AMAZING SITE...
LOVED IT
Just wanted to say that
thanks
Greetings,
I just wanted to drop you a quick line telling you how wonderful your site is. I am a Sophomore at the University of Washington and am doing a term project on the history of the telephone, past, present, and future, and you site was and excellent help. It was very clear and no problem to navigate. It appears that you have spent quite some time putting it together and I thoroughly enjoyed it and wanted to acknowledge your work. Thank you so much for your contribution!
Sincerely,
P.G.

Hello Tom
I'd just like to thank you and congratulate you on your fantastic site. I enjoyed it !
As a telecom engineer I worked with the Blegian company Belgacom (1975-1983), responsible for all teleprinter and data-communications in our area (about 1 million populations.). Since then
I'm teaching -- telecoms at our local university, and running a consultancy here in Hasselt.
Cangratulations - we'l be back often!

I am a returning student, who was overwhelmed by the subject of "wireless." I am preparing a six to ten page report, plus an oral report on the subject. Finally, I found your site, and have been able to "put my arms" around the subject. I admit readily I do not understand it all, but at least with your timeline and information, I can manage to write the paper. AND yes, be assured you will receive that credit for the information. Again, thank you. B.F.
Tom,
I am a training manager for the wireless division of MCI WORLDCOM. I came across your article on Cellular Telephone series that was first published in April, 1995. I am writing to ask your permission to copy your article and disseminate to all of our new hires. It is well-written, easy-to-understand , and makes learning fun. What requirements do you have for reproducing your article. Please advise...
Thank you,
T.M.

Dear Tom Farley
You are marvellous! Answering my vague questions about a manual phone exchange, and on a Saturday, too! You are very kind, and the answers you provided are just fine, and enough for what I need. Thank you so much for this personal touch -- I did not know when i sent off the E-mail, whether there might be a robot at the other end!
Blessings to you, and many, many thanks!

Mr. Farley:
I'd like to thank you again and again for responding to my message so quickly. In practically all of my other experiences with these projects, it usually takes up to a month for people to respond. Everything you said was helpful and absolutely true. I will continue to do research based on your suggestions, and I understand the importance to no longer post my address online. Once again, thank you kindly, and I would like to express again how wonderful and helpful your article was!

Tom Farley,
I teach a course in telecommunications that covers the history and evolution the Telephone system (I was the chief architect of the ITT1240 telecom switch, now the Alcatel 1000/S12) at Fairfield University and at the University of New Haven. May I have your permission to mirror your site on my server? I will give full credit and include a link to your site for the students. My site is at: http://doctord.webhop.net. Check out my computer networking class (CS642) section at the University of New Haven to see how I give credit. The Telecom course is EE670 at UnH and EE357 at Fairfield. Thanks for your consideration.

Dear Tom,
This is a really great site you have constructed. I really appreciate your effort. I have learnt such a lot. God bless you.
Regards, Mathew.
Hello,
I just looked over your website devoted to early dialing. We are producing a documentary for The History Channel entitled "A Wired World" - it is the history of information technology. We want to include the story of Almon Strowger. I'm looking for images- some that are on the website, but some that are not - namely any photos of Strowger himself - can you help?
Thanks for your help, and for the wonderful article.
J.S.
I LOVE this site! Very techy and very cool!

I've been a fan of your page for a while. Good luck on your new site..... Let me tell you the things I liked on your old site perhaps they can be part of this one.
I really liked how your page opened to your ramblings. It's like checking with an old friend. "What is Tom doing today?" I'm living overseas in Taiwan now which is kind of a dirty urban environment. Your page kept me informed on Technology and life (cats birds trees etc..)
Yes, your new opening page is more organized, but I come to your page for your jounal and its editorial comments then, the articles that don't change much.
2nd.. I liked your original logo. It was a tribute to Mr. Bell. It had a traditional old time look to it. It made me feel welcome. The current logo seems a little cold. Perhaps some pictures of the fathers of communication like Armstrong, Marconi etc.
I don't know.. I'm not a designer But I loved the original design. Anyway... the content and style are there.. and that's what I like.

Dear Mr. Farley:
I've just come across your web site (I imagine you get hundreds of e-mails that begin this way), and I thought I'd just write a quick note of appreciation. I'm in the beginning stages of an attempt to write a book on communications and society, combining historical and contemporary perspectives (I've been a consultant in the field for nearly 20 years, but writing is my first love). Anyway, I can tell that you have put a tremendous effort into this site, and it will be a great resource. Mostly, I appreciate the personal and friendly style of your writings, which is the way I try to approach my work, as well. I look forward to exploring your information, and expect I'll send you more expressions of gratitude as things progress.
Regards, D.T.
Just wanted to say thanks for answering all my wireless questions. Great site with some unique content, particularly the historical notes. I recently started working for a company in the wireless space and need a good primer. I searched all over the internet for something like that and
finally found it on your server. Thanks again.
T.W.
Tom,
Thanks for forwarding this on to me. This is making more sense now. I've been taking wireless courses at a community college in Seattle but the teachers there have been pretty bad - (except for a few I had that worked for Verizon). There's no full time instructor, so it's really spotty. It's very frustrating because I could probably do a better job teaching then most of them. I worked almost 20 years as radio officer on commercial ships and I've been a ham since I was 15 years old. Thanks to you and Mark, I can now steer them in the right direction when they fumble things. . .

Hi there..
I loved your page..i found it off of msn or google, i forget which one..but, after reading it, there are a few sarcastic lines and i started bursting out at work...like "This silly little spinning globe is supposed to represent the Public Switched Telephone Network at large. "..hahha..i know..so dumb..but I really enjoyed it..I am still reading it..and bookmarking almost every page...thanks for your good work and i like that humor!!
Sincerely, J.B.
To whomever is reading this- What a fantastic site! I've been reading for an hour, but sadly it's 4:am and I must go to sleep. The articles are fantastically informative and have answered a lot of my questions about mobile telephony, and your history of wireless networks has inspired me to do more work on my on-line theatrical sound design handbook.
Thanks! (and also, thanks for the Britney pictures; I really appreciate those, as well as the tribute to your cat. I'm working toward similar lines on my site. And where did you get the poem about the Decibel? It's great!)
Good night,
-K.
This site is the greatest, lots of educational material, it is just an awesome source of great papers. It helped me a lot , thank you Mr.Editor and colleagues. I also have one question, besides written material and school where else is it possible to get more hands on training on basic and advanced telephone wiring and PBX , I know many schools like Mt.Sierra college in Pasadena CA offering TCT bachelors degree and all the courses and also Learning Tree company offering hands on training but these are too expensive and you have to be a telecom company employee.
Thank you all , R.T

Editor's note: No, that's not me holding the cat. If it is a cat . . .
