404 Woes — Help!
Because the site has been pulled down, everybody looking for a file will get a 404 error page, you know, “File Not Found.” What I am trying to do is direct those people from the 404 to my home page so that they can see what is going on. Ideally, people would hit the home page instead of a 404 . I’m making little progress.
The first 404 that showed up was from my hosting company. See below. Next, using a WordPress plugin called 404 Pro, I attempted to make a custom 404 page.
Tech support said to remove the 404.html page from my root directory and everything would work. I couldn’t find the exact page, but I did delete a page called 404.shtml. What happened is shown below. Even more elemental and still not working.
I then tried two or three other plugins without success. Almost by accident, I stumbled upon the idea of making my own redirect page. I created a text file named 404.shtml and put in my own language and a link. It doesn’t automatically shuttle you to the home page but it works and I can now improve on it. It was done in what’s called a Rich Text Editor.
I am waiting again on tech support. My e-mail is firstname.lastname@example.org.
